Obituary

William Appleby

Salida Mail (Colorado)

15 September 1899 (news article)

"A telegram received in Salida yesterday afternoon and addressed to Mrs. Appleby at Poncha Springs

announced that Mr. Appleby had died at San Diego, California, early Thursday morning.  The telegram

was sent at once to Mrs. Appleby but what arrangements may have been made for the disposition of the

remains is not known at this writing.

William Appleby was one of the oldest pioneers of the upper Arkansas and was for many years past a

resident of Poncha Springs, holding the position of  postmaster.  For more than a year past he has been

in failing health and went to southern California in the hope of being  benefitted.  But his condition

failed to materially improve and the end has for some time been anticipated."

Records indicate William Appleby is buried in the Poncha Springs Cemetery in Colorado.

Notes:

Research for William Appleby:  Records for the husband of Antonia Appleby, gives New York as his

place of birth.  In researching for this article, two possible William Applebys surface.

In my opinion, the least likely, is the William Appleby, a Seaman, born 1851, living with his parents,

William, Sr. and Eliza Appleby and sister, Hattie, in Southhold, Suffolk County, New York, in 1870.

The other William Appleby, also in the 1870 census, age 18, in Westerlo, Albany Co. NY.  He was

living in the household of Lucino and Emily Bates and working as a farm laborer.  It is interesting to

note that Mr. and Mrs. Bates had a 7 year old daughter named Carrie, the same name as William

and Antonia gave to their eldest daughter.  Nearby, was William's younger brother, Elmer Appleby,

located in another household, also working as a farm laborer.   There was a significant Appleby

family living in the Westerlo area for several generations.  More information regarding William in

article for Antonia Appleby.
