1. Mary E. Appleby married Reddin W. May. They are shown on the 1850 census of Colleton County right above the Family of David Clinton Appleby. The May's are number 139 and the Appleby's are number 140 in the order of households visited. The Census Taker differs with David Gavin in the spelling of Reddin. The census shows that Reddin was twenty-four years old. Mary was eighteen and their child, Clinton, was one year old. Mary died between 1852-1858. Mary and Reddin had more than one child. While their Grandmother, Amelia Ann Appleby, did not mention them by name in her will, she left a dollar to be divided among them. They are: Clinton, William, Urban and ____zelle? The following is a direct quote from The David Gavin Diary: "Reardon W. May, son of Jacob H. May and grandson of Reardon May, died in the first week in February 1859. He had only a few weeks married his second wife, a Miss Berry, daughter of Capt. Andrew Berry near Branchville. His first wife was a daughter of D.C. Appleby" Ref: The 1850 US Census of Colleton County, S.C; The David Gavin Diary; Notes of Hazel Bissett. |
