Notes: Much of the information for this family from Mary Appleby Bolles, daughter of David Dillard Appleby and niece to James Alfred Appleby. Mary and her husband, lived in Modesto, California, and James Alfred lived in the neighboring town of Merced, California.
William Alfred Appleby and his first wife, Mary McKoin, divorced about 1853. and she married a neighbor, Thomas Whitlock. William Alfred married Elizabeth Snow-Freeman. Elizabeth had been previously married to William George Freeman. She had 3 sons in the Freeman marriage, George, William and Sterling Freeman. Sterling died at age 12.
Family information reveals that after Mary McKoin Appleby married Thomas Whitlock, she remarked that she "had rather be Bill Appleby's slave, than Tom Whitlock's queen." In the 1870 and 1880 census there was a son, Henry C. Whitlock, born 1858 to Mary and Thomas Whitlock.
William married a third time to Mary Ann Snyder-Hassler , on 12 July 1866, no children to this marriage. When widowed from Appleby, Mary Ann married Peter Imler on 26 Nov 1876, in Greene Co. No followup on this marriage, but on 19 April 1899, in Greene Co. Missouri, Mary Ann Snyder-Hassler-Appleby-Imler married John P. Stover.
There may have been a child born to William and Mary Ann, as in the 1900 census, Greene Co. Mo. there was a child, named Ottie Appleby living with grandfather, John P. Stover. (Would he not have been a step-father?) Mary Ann's died 30 October 1901 (but could it have been 1900?) and is buried at Mt. Comfort Cemetery, Sec. A, Row 23. Buried beside her is William Appleby, and John and Hannah Snyder, her parents. Her marriage to Stover would have lasted for only a year or two, before her death.
Ollie would not have been William Alfred Appleby's child, as Ollie was born in 1880 and William Alfred died in 1873. Further research needed here.
James Alfred and Drucilla (Thomas) Appleby James Alfred and Drucilla Appleby lived for a time in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Drucilla's mother lived there. Drucilla's parents, Jackson and Celia Thomas migrated to Missouri in 1853. In 1870 Greene Co Missouri census, Jackson, age 52, was born in North Carolina and his wife Celia, age 38, was born in Tennessee. Celia may have been his second wife. In 1870 there were 9 children listed in the household. In a letter written by William Edward Appleby, son of Albert Barnes and Laura (Jarrett) Appleby) in 1931, to his cousin Catherine Bell Appleby-Wheeler, "Jim and Dee are both alive. Dee went out to Jim's about a year ago. Their P.O. is Merced, California. Dee's girl and boy are both in California. (note: Jim and Dee were brothers. Dee is David Dillard Appleby.) A copy of this letter rec'd from Evelyn Wheeler-Lindsey, a grand-daughter of Catherine B. Appleby-Wheeler.
