"Mr. Appleby had few contacts with politics.  His father,

A. B. Appleby, was presiding judge of the county court

from 11894-1899.  Ed Appleby ran for the same office 

in 1934, but lost to Will French.  When French died of

a heart attack in his office one day, E. H. Scholten was

appointed to fill the vacancy in 1935.  Ed Appleby ran 

against Scholten for the unexpired term, and was 

defeated, again.
