Obituary for George W. Appleby, 3d
George W. Appleby, 74, of 129 West Burke Street, mayor of Martinsburg for 1926-1930, died at 12:45 p.m. yesterday in City Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Born in Washington, D.C., son of George W. and Laura Miller Appleby, he came to Martinsburg at an early age and was a plumbing and heating engineeer until retiring about nine years ago.
The youngest mayor ever to succeed himself in office here, he was a member of Equality Lodge No. 44, A.F. and A.M.; Martinsburg Lodge of Perfection; Wheeling Consistory 32nd Degree; Osiris Shrine Temple of Wheeling; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Easter Panhandle Shrine Club, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Rotary Club, West Virginia and Maryland Master Plumbers Association, 50-year member of the B.P.O. of E. No. 778 and a charter member and secretary-treasurer of the Berkeley Loan and Thrift Corporation.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Lou Ramsey Appleby; one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Appleby Hess; one sister: Mrs. Robert S. Stewart, Jr., West Martin Street and step-mother, Mrs. George W. Appleby, Sr. West Martin Street.
Services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Rosemont, Kogelshatz and Coffman Funeral Home, by the Rev. Paul J. Sampson, of Calvary Methodist Church. Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Equality Lodge will conduct Masonic graveside rites.
Honorary bearers will be officers and directors of the Berkeley Loan and Thrift Corporation and former mayors of Martinsburg.

Town Boy Will Also Act As Marshal During Occasion
Winds Up Work At West Virginia University
At the 74th annual commencement exercises at West Virginia University Saturday, George S. Appleby, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Appleby, Jr., West Burke Street, will act as student marshal for the graduating class of the University School of Medicine. Appleby who will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in medicine, was appointed marshal by Dean Edward J. Van Liere.
This year he has been a member of the governing council at Men's Residence Hall, and was elected to appear in the 1940-41 edition of "Who's Who" among students in the American universities and colleges.
Appleby is a member of the Phi Beta Pi medical fraternity and is secretary for the Beta Alpha Chapter. He has been the West Virginia correspondent to the student section of the Journal of the American Medical Association. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1939 from West Virginia University and will continue his medical studies next Fall at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia.
Mr. and Mrs. Appleby, accompanied by their daughter, Miss Elizabeth Appleby, are leaving tomorrow for Morgantown, to attend the graduation exercises.
