From recent research, it seems Edwin R. Appleby, is the son of Levi and Rebecca Appleby.

They lived in the town of Necedah, Juneau County, Wisconsin in the 1850 census

Notes: also lived in Minersville, Ashland Co. Wisconsin 1860 Census, Necedah, Juneau Co. Wisconsin listed Edwin R.  Appleby family wife, Allie, Sons, Vernon and Grant.  Living next to  Edwin in same Census was L. C. Appleby and his family.  This   L. C.'s   wife, Julia, age 26, was the father of Edwin R. children:  Ellen age 12 born in Illinois, possibly child of first wife.  Other children: Emma, age 8; Adelia age 5; Charles age 3, Levi age 1. The last 4 were all born in Wisconsin.

1885 Edwin and son, Grant worked at their family Planning Mill in Wichita, but lived in Winfield, Kansas.  All of the Edwin's son were involved in the family business.  

By 1918 Edwin R. Appleby's, Allie had died (1892) and Edwin had a second wife, Lauretta.
Edwin, age 80,  and his wife, Lauretta,64,  are in 1920 census in Gardena, Los Angeles Co., California.  He owned a chicken farm.

1920 census; Los Angeles, California, gives birthplace of Edwin's Mother as Wisconsin and his father  as New York.
