Research Notes:

For Vernon E. Appleby

(In 1870, Vernon (age 9) and his brother Grant, age 5),

were with their parents in Lyon County, Kansas.


1901 Marriage record in Lyon Co. for Vernon and Clara Elsie Pritchard, said to be sister of first wife. They had a son  named Clarence.  There was another boy named Glenn Paul, probably a son of Vernon and Clara, but no documentation, yet.  Time frame fits.  He died age 3 years of age.

1920 Census,  Wichita, Kansas.
Vernon living with new (3rd) wife, Minnie, and son, Vere, by 1st wife in Wichita at 862 Spaulding.  The mother of Vere having died in 1900 Property owned free of mortgage.   By 1920 and for whatever reason, the business was sold and all of the sons went their separate ways.   Occupation: President   Running Drill.

2nd wife, Clara Appleby , age 42, divorced and son, Clarence, age 15,  by her marriage to Vernon Appleby, living in Wichita at 1134 Waco Street.  Clara buried in area of Appleby family burials in Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas.  Census gives birthplace for her parent's as Wales. 

According to his obituary, Vernon E. Appleby, between the years 1890-1899, moved from Wichita, Kansas to Galveston, Texas; Houston, Texas; Shreveport, Louisiana; Kansas City, Kansas and back to Wichita, Kansas.  A descendent stated that Vernon was in Construction Contracting  and was the builder of many important buildings in these other areas.
